Skill Level: The images are lifted straight from the movie and don't always match RWS imagery, though the meaning of the scene is always a match. Because the images are different, this is not the best beginner's deck.
Great For: Movie fans, art fans, intermediate and above users looking for a fun deck
Quick Verdict: Fantastic deck for fans of the movie or of lovely art.
I. First Impressions
Unboxing & Packaging: The cards come in a standard Insight two part box. The cards are very slightly sticky when first picked up, but some shuffling and handling quickly took care of that.
Overall Vibe: The art style matches the movie beautifully, giving the feeling of being in a fairytale when you use the cards.
Initial Reactions: The first card I pulled was the Two of Swords, which made me feel like this deck would be good for decisions and choices.
II. The Cards
Major Arcana: Major Arcana are arranged in standard order, with Strength at VIII and The Hanged Man at XII. Names are across the bottom. There is a frame, but it doesn't constrain the image in any way.
Minor Arcana: Fully illustrated Minors! Very unusual for a fandom deck. We have Goblets, Florins, Wands and Swords for the suits, keeping with the feel of the deck. Unusually, Minors are numbered in Roman, not Arabic.
Handling & Durability: The cards are standard tarot size and shuffle well. I dropped one and it bent across the middle, but I immediately put it under a heavy books and it smoothed out so well I couldn't pick it out of the deck later.
III. The Guidebook
Writing Style: As far as I can tell, this is Erin Kwong's first tarot deck. I hope she writes more, because she's kept this easy to understand, faithful to both the movie and tarot as a system, and fun to read.
Card Meanings: The card meanings follow the traditional RWS meanings, with a playful Princess Bride twist.
Spreads & Extras: The book features four spreads and some general reading tips. Through no fault of Insight, I now find their print a bit tricky to read, but I was able to follow the spreads nicely!
IV. In Use
Intuitive Connection: It needs a little bit of patience to start, but I found having the movie playing in the background helps! Over time we got used to each other and it's now a fantastic deck to read with.
Reading Style: Blunt, blunt, blunt. Look at the Duellist's spread where it calls me out! This deck won't let you lie to yourself.
Best Uses: Straightforward, 'should I or shouldn't I' are the best for this deck. But it will not hesitate to give you its opinion on any subject!
Closing Impression: This is a really fun deck. A lot of work has gone in to it and it really shows. If you want a deck that will be completely honest with you...this is the one.
