Deck Review: Galactic Star Tarot by Alexandra Hanly and Pamela Chen and Kseniia Boko

Explore the deeper meanings of tarot with a little help from your Star Guides, an extensive array of Star Beings from diverse places across the Milky Way galaxy. In THE GALACTIC STAR TAROT, you’ll meet the Lyrans of the Wands, the Pleiadeans of the Cups, the Sirians of the Swords, and the Arcturians of the Disks who’ve sworn to protect and support you and all other humans and Starseeds on Earth. Intricately detailed art takes you from the desert of Area 51 on Earth to royal courts held upon starships and everywhere in between. When you reconnect to memories of your galactic history and the infinite potential of the Universe, miracles happen. Activate the star magic within you and awaken to a new realm of abundant blessings.

This deck is available now. You can see the unboxing video on Tiktok or Youtube and the full flickthrough on Tiktok or Youtube. I posted two spreads, an interview spread and a 4 card Mission spread.

I. First Impressions
Unboxing Experience: The deck comes in a sturdy two part box with artwork from the deck both inside and outside. There are affirmations inside the lid and on the inside of the box, which is a nice touch to get you in the mood before looking at any cards at all. The box was wrapped in the plastic and there was a paper band around the cards. When I went to open them, the top card was the 4 of Cups and they ran in order from there, so I think they were put together in two halves and just misaligned. Not a big deal, but if it happens to you, don't worry! Your cards are all there; the Fool will be about halfway through the deck with all the Majors in order behind him.
Artwork Style: The artwork is a sort of mix of fantasy and sci fi, with aliens and space ships, but also dragons, winged animals and other fantasy images. They're clear and colourful, with a variety of nationalities, colours and body types both human and alien. They are based on the RWS system so if you have any familiarity with that, you'll be able to read with these even before you learn the subtleties of them. One of the things I loved in this deck were the subtle nods to famous sc fi franchises - like the hidden 42 in the World card, and various familiar looking spaceships in others!

II. The Cards
The cards have this, reversible background:

Major Arcana: The Major Arcana are mostly aliens of various kinds. Strength is at 8 and Justice at 11. They closely follow the RWS, with aliens taking the place of our familiar guides. The range of landscapes and settings is amazing.

Minor Arcana: The Minors are fully illustrated, depicting different Starseed groups - beings who first incarnated on other planets before coming to Earth, either to assist humanity or simply as part of their journey. Each suit aligns with a Starseed race: the fiery Lyrans (Wands), the emotional Pleiadeans (Cups), the wise Sirians (Swords), and the grounded Arcturians (Disks - Starseed societies don’t use money, making traditional Pentacles or Coins less fitting). While pip cards may show unaware Starseeds, the Court cards depict fully awakened guardians watching over them. Unlike the Majors, which are set entirely in cosmic realms, the Minors blend alien landscapes with human settings, making them more relatable for readers.

Card Stock and Size: The cards are a standard tarot size with a slightly matt finish, making them easy to shuffle and hold. They feel sturdy, but not too thick; I've been using them every day for the last fortnight or so and there's no sign of chipping or tearing. A couple of the cards did have a very slight bend when I first opened the deck, but spending time under a heavy book has completely fixed that.

III. The Guidebook
Writing Style and Readability: Alexandra and Pamela, the authors, have a friendly, chatty style in the guidebook, explaining the philosophy behind the deck in an easy to follow manner. They are clear that there's no one-size-fits-all when it comes to tarot, which is my favourite approach; they want readers to use their intuition as much as the suggestions they make.
Card Meanings: Both Majors and Minors get two pages, featuring an upright meaning, a reversed meaning, a message from the star guides, and a mantra that can be repeated or used as a meditation or journaling prompt. The meanings are clear and easy to understand and apply to everyday life, while the prompts are thought provoking and interesting.

Spreads and Techniques: The book includes 4 spreads, and tips for creating your own. The included spreads are a 1 card, a 3 card, a 4 card (linked above) and a 5 card, which is a nice mix.

IV. In Use
Intuition and Connection: As an RWS deck I was able to start reading with this deck right out of the box. I liked the artwork and found it interesting to study them. There are some very clever interpretations here; one of my favourites is the Death card, showing some galactic observers watching a supernova.

Clarity of Readings: My first full reading, an interview spread, was a bit of a struggle - I couldn't understand what the cards were telling me until I took a step back and thought about it in a new way. Once I had that key, subsequent readings were easier. If you're struggling with this deck, I highly recommend sticking with it - it does get easier as the deck gets used to you! My daily cards went great, with a couple of readers commenting that they really needed to hear that day's message.

Suitability for Different Skill Levels: As an RWS, this is suitable for any level, and the friendly guidebook is a great help as well.

Final Thoughts
I've really enjoyed working with this deck. The artwork is clever, inclusive and attractive, and the guidebook is well written and easy to follow. If you're looking for a fun new deck, a way to expand your consciousness or perhaps some writing prompts, this is a great one to try. I'll be keeping it in my rotation.
