Deck review: Total Tarot's Pre-Raphaelite Tarot by Luigi Costa

The vivid colors and medieval imagery of the Pre-Raphaelite movement makes for a tarot deck that is rich with a sense of mystery and romance. Luigi Costa, illustrator of the Mystical Tarot Deck, has created a work of unsurpassed beauty and deep spiritual power. This deck, based on the traditional Rider-Waite-Smith cards, is at once cryptic and insightful, the perfect combination of qualities for readers and collectors alike.

Pre-Raphaelite Tarot is available now. As a Total Tarot deck, there is no unboxing video; you can see the flickthrough video on TikTok.

Total Tarot is a bimonthly magazine designed to help teach anyone how to read tarot. With every two issues, readers get a complete tarot deck from Lo Scarabeo, one of the major Tarot companies on the market. The art of these decks is true to the originals, but they have frames where the originals don't and the LWB is not included, instead there is some information in the magazine about the history of the deck and the specific meanings attached to cards. This is a great collection if you want to try a lot of styles of deck at very reasonable prices - I'm learning a lot about my preferences!

The Pre-Raphaelite deck is based on the work of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a group of painters who were active in the mid 1800s. Their works are brightly coloured and richly detailed, with a lot of symbolism and hidden meanings. They used a lot of historical and mythological events as inspiration, and used real people as their models. The deck was put together by Luigi Costa from their body of work.

As a TT deck, I can't talk about the LWB or the box, so let's get straight to the cards! They feature this, non reversible back design:

The TT deck features a thin black border, though the original deck is borderless. Majors have their names and Roman numbers at the bottom. Minors have their names and Arabic numbers at the bottom. The art is RWS based. Here's a sample:

My querant found the readings accurate and was able to immediately identify what we were talking about each time.

I love the colours and the amount of detail in each card. I've really enjoyed working with these. I think this would be a great beginner's deck as they adhere to RWS and they're really interesting to look at. A lovely look at the history of art as well as a very functional deck!
