Total Tarot Issue 1

Hi all! Welcome to the first entry looking at a particular magazine in this series. Once again, I have no relationship with Total Tarot, I just love talking about this magazine. I'm going to give you an idea of what the layout is like and how the content is arranged.

Issue one comes with the first Deck in Detail, and the Major Arcana from the Golden Art Nouveau deck.

As the first issue, there's a lot of extra stuff that won't be in future issues. For one thing, they're very eager to get you to sign up to the subscription; there's at least three different places in this package where they advertise the subscription at you. There's also a guide to the series, a four page booklet that shows some of the decks and content we'll be getting - and yes, there's another ad for the subscription on the back!

There's a Deck in Detail booklet, one of two we're going to get. This goes through the Radiant Wise Deck in detail, with a description of each card and a selection of key words along with a picture of the card. It's a great starting off point for learning the cards. This booklet goes through all the Majors and Cups. The Pentacles, Wands and Swords will be in the second Deck in Detail, which comes with Issue 3.

The magazine itself, then. There's a general introduction (as well as an introduction to the tarot writer who's going to be our guide. She looks kind.) There's a meditation to help you get comfortable with your cards, and then it moves on to a basic guide to the layout of a deck and some things you can use readings for in Reading the Tarot. Arcana Reference has a keyword guide to the whole deck to serve as a very basic introduction.

The next section is Tarot Spreads. Spreads are a thing that I struggle with, so I'm looking forward to reading this part of each magazine and getting some tips. This issue includes general tips like where each person should sit and how to shuffle and pick cards. The spread given in this issue is the basic one card, which I think most beginners try anyway!

The next page is a visual reference to the Golden Art Nouveau Major Arcana, which is the cards we got with this issue. It's nice to see them all laid out like that, it makes it easy to follow the progression of the story. They're very beautiful cards.

Next the Tarot Deck Library talks about the history of the deck, which is fascinating stuff.

Card in Detail will feature every week, delving deep into the meaning and symbolism of one card at a time. For Issue one that's the Fool. There are meanings for various kinds of readings, and, one of my favourite things, images of the Fool from different decks so we can see differences and similarities.

Tarot Techniques will teach us different ways to use the deck. Today's is about how to frame questions to get the best results. Finally, the Tarot Glossary goes through A and B to define some of the terms we'll be coming across often. The Glossary will only take up a few issues at this rate, it'll be interesting to see what comes afterwards.

I'm really looking forward to getting more issues and learning more!
